Clock Watching

Always and forever

were your words

not mine.

I saw us

in more finite terms

concentrated on the now

have you my best

moment to moment.

You were the one

setting the timers

mapping out our progress

pulling me toward

arbitrary finish lines.

What you wanted

and still expect today

are all of my tomorrows.

What I wanted

was to simply love you

maybe not forever

but well

and for a time.
