How to Lose

You tell yourself
you cannot live without them
and once they are gone,
you find you can,
you find you do.

As one after another
comes and goes

you batten down

shore up

and find in fact
you can live
with incredibly little,

incredibly, less.

They say living’s an art:

But I say they’re wrong:

I say the real art

is in the losing.
